About PennaPal

Some things are worth slowing down for.

PennaPal is a quiet place to read what others have written, and to write back. Friendships begin with words, not photos.

Why PennaPal exists

We missed being thought about.

Most of our conversations now happen in fragments. Quick replies, read receipts, endless feeds. We’re more connected than ever, and somehow less known.

Remember when someone took the time to write to you? It still feels the same.

One pen pal once described hers as “a diary that writes back.” That’s what we hope PennaPal can be.

A letter is different. Someone sat down, thought about you, and chose their words. You can feel that when you read it. PennaPal was made to bring that feeling back, for anyone who would rather be understood than seen.

We’re a small, independent company based in Aotearoa New Zealand, a long way from most things, which may be why we value a good letter. PennaPal will be open to writers everywhere.

What we believe

Read first. Write back.

Words before faces

No profile photos, no swiping. You meet someone through what they write.

Friendship, not dating

PennaPal is for curiosity and companionship. That’s all it’s for.

Slow is the point

Letters take time to arrive. Replies come when they’re ready. Nothing here is urgent.

Kindness by design

Anyone can decline, close a conversation kindly, or step away for a while.

Our promises

Your words will be safe here.

These are the standards PennaPal will meet from the day it opens. None of these services are running yet; only the waitlist is.

  • PennaPal is for adults only. Everyone confirms they’re 18 or over, privately.
  • Other members see your pen name, PennaPal ID, the writing you publish, any one-line introduction you add, and the country you choose to share (or “Somewhere in the world”). Your real name, age, gender and exact location aren’t shown unless you reveal them in your own writing.
  • Reports are read by a real person, usually within a day.
  • We never sell your words or show you ads.
  • Your letters are yours. Download them any time.

Someone might be glad you wrote.

PennaPal isn’t open yet. Join the waitlist and we’ll write to you when it is. Founding writers can help shape it first.
